Abstract
A high voltage switch comprising: a high voltage power supply providing power greater than about 5 kV; a control voltage power source; a plurality of switch modules arranged in series with respect to each other each of the plurality of switch modules configured to switch power from the high voltage power supply, and an output configured to output a pulsed output signal having a voltage greater than the rating of any switch of the plurality of switch modules, a pulse width less than 2 μs, and at a pulse frequency greater than 10 kHz.
Claims21
A high voltage switch comprising:
- a high voltage power source that produces a voltage greater than 5 kV;
- a control voltage power source;
- a first switch module comprising:
- a first switch having a collector, an emitter, and a gate;
- a first snubber circuit coupled with the first switch;
- a first gate driver electrically or inductively coupled with the gate of the first switch;
- and
- a first transformer comprising a first transformer core, a first primary winding wound around the first transformer core, and a first secondary winding wound around the first transformer core, wherein the control voltage power source is coupled with the first primary winding, and wherein the first gate driver is coupled with the first secondary winding;
- a second switch module arranged in series with the first switch module, the second switch module comprising:
- a second switch having a collector, an emitter, and a gate;
- a second snubber circuit coupled with the second switch;
- a second gate driver electrically or inductively coupled with the gate of the second switch, and
- a second transformer comprising a second transformer core, a second primary winding wound around the second transformer core, and a second secondary winding wound around the second transformer core, wherein the control voltage power source is coupled with the second primary winding, and wherein the second gate driver is coupled with the second secondary winding;
- and
- an output electrically coupled with the high voltage power source, the first switch, and the second switch, the output.
A high voltage switch comprising:
- a high voltage power source supply providing power with a voltage greater than about 5 kV;
- a control voltage power source;
- a plurality of switch modules arranged in series with respect to each other and coupled with the high voltage power source, each of the plurality of switch modules configured to switch power from the high voltage power supply, each of the plurality of switch modules comprising:
- a switch having a collector, an emitter, and a gate;
- a snubber circuit;
- a gate trigger electrically or inductively coupled with the gate of the switch, wherein the switch is opened and closed based on a signal from the gate trigger;
- and
- a transformer comprising a transformer core, a primary winding wound around the transformer core, and a secondary winding wound around the transformer core, the primary winding electrically coupled with the control voltage source, the secondary winding electrically coupled with the gate trigger;
- and
- an output coupled with the high voltage power supply and the plurality of switch modules, the output configured to output a pulsed output signal having a pulse width less than 2 μs, and at a pulse frequency greater than 10 kHz.
