Application-layer service traffic communication using datacenter network fabric as proxy

A method comprising:

• managing, by a fabric controller, a plurality of switches configured to interconnect a plurality of host nodes, each of the plurality of host nodes comprising a container environment;
• implementing, by the fabric controller, policies through virtual fabric edge instances executing on each host node;
• implementing, by the fabric controller, application functions through the virtual fabric edge instances by routing application traffic from application instances in the container environment through the virtual fabric edge instances;
• and
• executing, in each of the plurality of container environments, a service mesh proxy, the service mesh proxy in each container environment being configured to query the virtual fabric edge instance for data regarding application functions.

One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause performance of:

• managing, by a fabric controller, a plurality of switches configured to interconnect a plurality of host nodes, each of the plurality of host nodes comprising a container environment;
• implementing, by the fabric controller, policies through virtual fabric edge instances executing on each host node;
• implementing, by the fabric controller, application functions through the virtual fabric edge instances by routing application traffic from application instances in the container environment through the virtual fabric edge instances;
• and
• executing, in each of the plurality of container environments, a service mesh proxy, the service mesh proxy in each container environment being configured to query the virtual fabric edge instance for data regarding application functions.
