Device group identification

A system comprising a mobile device in a household comprising a plurality of smart devices connected to a local area network, wherein the mobile device comprises a network interface, at least one processor, and at least one tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium including instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the mobile device is configured to:

• display, via a control application of a media playback system on a graphical display of the mobile device, a rooms control comprising controls to select smart devices within the household for grouping into a room;
• receive, via the displayed rooms control, input data representing a command to create a new room group, the input data comprising input data representing selection of one or more smart devices for the new room group;
• in response to receiving the input data representing the command to create the new room group, form a room group, wherein the instructions executable by at least one processor such that the mobile device is configured to form the room group comprise instructions executable by the at least one processor such that the mobile device is configured to (i) receive, via the control application, input data indicating a display name for the room group, (ii) determine a particular group identification for the room group, wherein the particular group identification is unique among other room groups within the household, and (iii) send, via the network interface, data representing one or more instructions to the one or more smart devices to form the new room group with the particular group identification;
• in response to formation of the new room group, update an interface for the household to indicate the room group;
• and
• send, via the network interface to a cloud server, data representing the room group for storage by the cloud server, wherein the data comprises the particular group identification.

A method comprising:

• displaying, via a control application of a media playback system on a graphical display of a mobile device, a rooms control comprising controls to select smart devices within a household for grouping into a room;
• receiving, via the displayed rooms control, input data representing a command to create a new room group, the input data comprising input data representing selection of one or more smart devices for the new room group;
• in response to receiving the input data representing the command to create the new room group, forming a room group, wherein forming the room group comprises (i) receiving, via the control application, input data indicating a display name for the room group, (ii) determining a particular group identification for the room group, wherein the particular group identification is unique among other room groups within the household, and (iii) sending, via a network interface, data representing one or more instructions to the one or more smart devices to form the new room group with the particular group identification;
• in response to formation of the new room group, updating an interface for the household to indicate the room group;
• and
• sending, via the network interface to a cloud server, data representing the room group for storage by the cloud server, wherein the data comprises the particular group identification.
