A method of lowering triglycerides in a subject on stable statin therapy having type 2 diabetes mellitus and fasting triglycerides of about 200 mg/dl to about 500 mg/dl, the method comprising administering to the subject a composition comprising about 4 g of ethyl eicosapentaenoate per day for a period of time effective to reduce the fasting triglycerides in the subject wherein the composition comprises at least 96% by weight ethyl eicosapentanoate.
