Ultra-low power mesh network

A process for mesh communications between a plurality of mesh network devices, each mesh network device comprising a wakeup transceiver and a network transceiver which is asleep until it receives a wakeup signal from the wakeup transceiver, the process comprising:

• the wakeup transceiver receiving a first bit sequence, each bit of the first bit sequence indicating the presence or absence of RF energy, the wakeup transceiver comparing the first bit sequence to a first template and upon a match, the wakeup transceiver thereafter comparing a second bit sequence to a second template, the second bit sequence at a second bit rate greater than the first bit rate, the first bit sequence having a false alarm rate in excess of 10%;
• upon a match of the second bit sequence to the second template, the wakeup transceiver asserting a wakeup signal to the network transceiver;
• the network transceiver transmitting an acknowledgment to a mesh network device transmitting the first bit sequence and second bit sequence;
• the network transceiver thereafter receiving at least one packet of data from the mesh network device transmitting the first bit sequence and second bit sequence;
• the network transceiver thereafter identifying a next recipient of the at least one packet of data, and causing the wakeup transceiver to transmit a wakeup signal to a different mesh network device.

A mesh transceiver comprising:

• a wakeup transceiver further comprising:
• an energy detector for generating a sequence of RF energy detection values;
• a first bit sequence detector comparing the sequence of RF energy detection values to a first template and generating a first match;
• a second bit sequence detector comparing the sequence of RF energy detection values to a second template and generating a second match only if the first match is successful, and also generating a wakeup signal if both the first match and second match are successful;
• the second bit sequence at a greater bit rate than the bit rate of the first bit sequence;
• the first bit sequence detector having a false alarm rate of 10% or more;
• a network transceiver further comprising:
• a wireless communications interface for transmitting and receiving high speed wireless packets according to at least one of an 802.11 packet protocol, a Bluetooth packet protocol, or a Zigbee packet protocol;
• a table of entries associating other mesh transceivers with an Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) value and hop count indicating the number of stations to a gateway device;
• the network transceiver updating the table of entries upon receipt of a packet from another mesh transceiver.
