Abstract
A magnetic mountain bike pedal assembly provides for at least one pedal having a center member, the center member having at least one magnet in its center portion, a plate adapted to be removedly attached to a shoe wherein the plate contains at least one magnet, wherein when the plate and the center member are aligned a disconnectable magnetic connection is formed. In some embodiments, either the first magnetic element or the second magnetic element, or both may be Neodymium, and in some embodiments they may be axially-magnetized Neodymium. In some embodiments, a shoe is attached to the plate, and the shoe has at least ferrous metal cleat.
Claims22
A pedal assembly comprising:
- a pedal body;
- a housing;
- at least one first magnetic element positioned in the housing, the at least one first magnetic element being axially magnetized;
- a spindle having a first end, a second end, and a rotation axis, the spindle extending through the pedal body and the housing, the spindle being releasably connected to the pedal body and housing, the pedal body and housing being rotatable relative to the spindle;
- a plate element configured to be connected to a shoe, the plate element being magnetically connected to the at least one first magnetic element when the plate element is positioned adjacent to the housing.
A method of using a pedal assembly comprising:
- providing a pedal body, a housing, a spindle, and a plate element, the housing including at least one first magnetic element, the at least one first magnetic element being axially magnetized, the spindle having a first end, a second end, and a rotation axis, the spindle extending through the pedal body and housing and being releasably connected to the pedal body, the housing and pedal body being rotatable about the rotation axis, and the plate element being fixedly connected to a shoe;
- and
- providing a releasable magnetic connection between the plate element and the at least one first magnetic element when the shoe is supported on the pedal body.
A pedal assembly comprising:
- a pedal body;
- a housing having a flat planar surface arranged to contact a user's shoe;
- at least one first magnetic element positioned in the housing;
- a spindle having a first end, a second end, and a rotation axis, the spindle extending through the pedal body and the housing, the pedal body and housing being rotatable about the rotation axis;
- at least one second magnetic element configured to be mounted to the user's shoe;
- wherein the at least one second magnetic element magnetically and releasably connects to the at least one first magnetic element when the housing is positioned adjacent to the at least one second magnetic element.
A pedal assembly comprising:
- a pedal body;
- a housing having a perimeter;
- a gap provided between at least a portion of the perimeter of the housing and the pedal body;
- at least one first magnetic element positioned in the housing, the at least one first magnetic element being axially magnetized;
- a spindle having a first end, a second end, and a rotation axis, the spindle extending through the pedal body and the housing, the spindle being releasably connected to the pedal body, the pedal body and housing being rotatable about the rotation axis;
- a plate element configured to be connected to a shoe, the plate element being magnetically connected to at least one of the at least one first magnetic element and the housing when the plate element is positioned adjacent to the housing.
A pedal assembly comprising:
- a pedal body having a polygonal cross-section;
- a housing;
- at least one first magnetic element positioned in the housing, the at least one first magnetic element being axially magnetized;
- a spindle having a first end, a second end, and a rotation axis, the spindle extending through the pedal body and the housing, the spindle being releasably connected to the pedal body, the pedal body and housing being rotatable about the rotation axis;
- a plate element configured to be connected to a shoe, the plate element being magnetically connected to at least one of the at least one first magnetic element and the housing when the plate element is positioned adjacent to the housing.
