• P is a modified phosphate;
• X2 is C1-C8 alkylene;
• X3 represents a bridging unit;
• Z is a nucleic acid;
• the linkage between X3 and Z is a phosphate or thiophosphate;
• and A is a branching unit selected from:
• wherein:
• R1 is hydrogen or C1-C10 alkylene;
• and R2 is C1-C10 alkylene.
