Abstract

A drill bit includes a bit head defining a longitudinal axis, an adjustable cutter blade having a cutting element, and a blade ramp extending transversely relative to the longitudinal axis and arranged to radially adjust the adjustable cutter blade when the adjustable cutter blade moves axially along a side of the bit head. The drill bit further includes a gauge pad coupled to the adjustable cutter blade and a gauge pad ramp extending transversely relative to the longitudinal axis and arranged to radially adjust the gauge pad when the gauge pad moves axially along the side of the bit head.

Dependent claims

A drill bit comprising:

a bit head defining a longitudinal axis;
an adjustable cutter blade comprising a cutting element;
a blade ramp positioned on an outer side surface of the bit head, the blade ramp extending transversely relative to the longitudinal axis and arranged to radially adjust the adjustable cutter blade, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bit head, when the adjustable cutter blade moves axially, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bit head, along the blade ramp;
a gauge pad coupled to the adjustable cutter blade;
and
a gauge pad ramp positioned on the outer side surface of the bit head, the gauge ramp extending transversely relative to the longitudinal axis and arranged to radially adjust the gauge pad when the gauge pad moves axially, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bit head, along the gauge ramp.

a gauge pad on the side of the bit head;
an actuator block coupled to the adjustable cutter blade and the gauge pad such that axial movement of the actuator block, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bit head, results in a corresponding axial movement of the adjustable cutter blade and the gauge pad, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bit head;
and
wherein the adjustable cutter blade and the gauge pad move in opposite radial directions, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bit head, in response to the axial movement of the adjustable cutter blade and the gauge pad in a same axial direction, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bit head.
