Abstract
A surgical retractor assembly is provided having a frame that releasably couples two retractor blades. The retractor blades are coupled to the frame via a pair of mobile carriages that engage a track on the frame. A third retractor blade is configured to be independent of the frame with the first two retractor blades. The independent blade may be fixably positionable in the patient by a direct coupling to a rigid table mount. The retractor assembly may be utilized for creating anterior access to spinal target site while the patient is oriented in the lateral decubitus position.
Claims27
A system comprising:
- a retractor assembly comprising:
- a rigid frame having an arcuate track;
- a first carriage and second carriage, each carriage being coupled to the rigid frame and movable along the arcuate track;
- a first blade post secured to the first carriage;
- a second blade post secured to the second carriage;
- a first retractor blade coupled to a distal end of the first blade post, thereby being adjustably coupled to the rigid frame;
- a second retractor blade coupled to a distal end of the second blade post, thereby being adjustably coupled to the rigid frame;
- a first handle coupled to a proximal end of the first blade post and being configured to be grasped to rotate or translate the first retractor blade relative to the rigid frame;
- and
- a second handle coupled to a proximal end of the second blade post and being configured to be grasped to rotate or translate the second retractor blade relative to the rigid frame,
- wherein the first carriage includes:
- a blade holder configured to hold the first blade post;
- a compression cap having a lower surface configured to interface with an upper portion of the blade holder;
- a tensioner configured to tension the compression cap against the blade holder;
- a column extending through the blade holder, the compression cap, and the tensioner;
- and
- a locking cap configured to be advanced along the column toward the compression cap to lock the first carriage and configured to be advanced along the column away from the compression cap to unlock the first carriage.
A retractor assembly comprising:
- a frame defining a groove;
- and
- a first mobile carriage comprising:
- a foot configured to be slidably received in the groove of the rigid frame;
- a blade holder configured to hold a first blade post;
- a compression cap having a lower surface configured to interface with an upper portion of the blade holder;
- a tensioner configured to tension the compression cap against the blade holder;
- a column extending through the blade holder, the compression cap, and the tensioner;
- and
- a locking cap configured to be advanced along the column toward the compression cap to lock the carriage and configured to be advanced along the column away from the compression cap to unlock the carriage.
A retractor assembly comprising:
- a main retractor assembly comprising:
- a rigid frame defining a groove;
- a first mobile carriage comprising:
- a foot configured to be slidably received in the groove of the rigid frame, the foot having a foot length greater than a foot width and a pair of bulbous ends curving into a middle foot region narrower than a width of the pair of bulbous ends;
- and
- a first blade channel;
- and
- a first retractor blade assembly having a first retractor blade and a first retractor handle connected by a first blade post,
- wherein the first retractor blade assembly is removably coupled to the first mobile carriage upon securing the first blade post in the first blade channel.
A system comprising:
- a retractor assembly comprising:
- a rigid frame having an arcuate track;
- a first and second carriage coupled to the rigid frame and movable along the arcuate track;
- a first retractor blade assembly comprising:
- a first blade post secured to the first carriage;
- a first retractor blade coupled to a distal end of the first blade post;
- and
- a first handle coupled to a proximal end of the first blade post;
- and
- a second retractor blade assembly comprising:
- a second blade post secured to the second carriage;
- a second retractor blade coupled to a distal end of the second blade post;
- and
- a second handle coupled to a proximal end of the second blade post,
- wherein the first handle is manipulatable to cause the first carriage to assume:
- an unlocked position in which the first retractor blade is adjustable with at least four degrees of freedom relative to the rigid frame and in which the first carriage is movable along the arcuate track of the rigid frame;
- and
- a locked position in which movement of the first carriage along the track is arrested and movement of the first retractor blade relative to the rigid frame is inhibited;
- and
- wherein the first handle is configured to be rotated out of the way once the first carriage assumes the locked position.
A system comprising:
- a retractor assembly comprising:
- a rigid frame having an arcuate track;
- a first carriage and second carriage, each carriage being coupled to the rigid frame and movable along the arcuate track;
- a first blade post secured to the first carriage;
- a second blade post secured to the second carriage;
- a first retractor blade coupled to a distal end of the first blade post, thereby being adjustably coupled to the rigid frame;
- a second retractor blade coupled to a distal end of the second blade post, thereby being adjustably coupled to the rigid frame;
- a first handle coupled to a proximal end of the first blade post and being configured to be grasped to rotate or translate the first retractor blade relative to the rigid frame;
- and
- a second handle coupled to a proximal end of the second blade post and being configured to be grasped to rotate or translate the second retractor blade relative to the rigid frame,
- wherein the first carriage includes a carriage handle rotatable to cause the first carriage to selectively assume:
- an unlocked position in which the first retractor blade is adjustable with at least four degrees of freedom relative to the rigid frame and in which the first carriage is movable along the arcuate track of the rigid frame;
- and
- a locked position in which movement of the first carriage along the track is arrested and movement of the first retractor blade relative to the rigid frame is inhibited;
- and
- wherein the handle is coupled such that the handle can be rotated out of the way once the carriage assumes the locked position.
A system comprising:
