Abstract

An enhanced radio system is disclosed that provides for the capture and playback of one or more radio stations. A user may tune to a station, scan through stations, rewind through missed content (even while the system is off), and fast-forward through undesired content, while downloading and uploading audio content, and sending content to another user. A user may rate content, and be notified when that content is played on any station, with undesirable content skipped and desirable content saved, or station recommendations made. Support for multiple sets of configuration information to allow use by multiple listeners and in multiple locations may be provided. Optionally provided are security features to prevent the unauthorized downloading, uploading, and saving of copies of content, other radio related and content related information, a karaoke mode, integration with a telephone with the radio, or reporting usage information to a collection facility.

Dependent claims

A portable, radio reception and playback device comprising:

a communication device that allows a plurality of individual digital audio content items to be received using the Internet, a digital-to-analog conversion subsystem for converting the received digital audio content items to analog, and a speaker for outputting the converted audio content items, said device configured to receive a sequence of audio content items using the communication device and play back the sequence using the digital-to-analog converter and the speaker as if it were a radio station, to determine a listener's preference for a first audio content item in the sequence while the first audio content item is being played by the device, to determine, based on the determined preference, a next audio content item to be played immediately following the first audio content item during which the listener's preference is determined, to prevent unauthorized copying of at least one of the received audio content items, and to include a global positioning system (GPS) unit to determine the listener's current location.
