Abstract
A system and method for reducing noise from a signal during drilling of a well. A system for generating mechanical vibrations may generate acoustic signals for communicating information, and may induce pressure signals in a drilling mud communicating information. A noise reduction system may receive both the acoustic and pressure signals and phase shift one set of signals to adjust for a time difference between the two. The system may also sample the signals and may overlay the signals or the sampled signals and cancel the noise from the received signals.
Claims21
A system with dual telemetry noise reduction for drilling, the system comprising:
- a mechanical vibration generation system adapted to generate a plurality of acoustic signals comprising data associated with drilling of a well borehole;
- and
- a noise reduction system adapted to receive the plurality of acoustic signals and a plurality of pressure signals induced in drilling mud located in the well borehole, with the plurality of pressure signals corresponding to the plurality of acoustic signals and offset therefrom by a first time period, compare the plurality of acoustic signals and the plurality of pressure signals, determine the first time period, and cancel noise from the plurality of acoustic signals or the plurality of pressure signals.
A dual telemetry noise reduction system for drilling, the system comprising:
- a noise reduction system adapted to receive a plurality of acoustic signals generated by a mechanical system located in a borehole of a well, receive a plurality of pressure signals induced in drilling mud in the borehole responsive to the plurality of acoustic signals and offset from the plurality of acoustic signals by a first time period, phase shift one of the plurality of acoustic signals or one of the plurality of pressure signals to adjust for the first time period, overlay the one of the phase shifted plurality of signals with the plurality of signals not phase shifted, and cancel noise in at least one of the plurality of acoustic signals and the plurality of pressure signals.
A method of communicating information from a wellbore during drilling, the method comprising the steps of:
- generating, by a mechanical vibration generation system in a borehole of a well being drilled, a plurality of acoustic signals and a plurality of pressure signals, during drilling of the borehole, wherein the plurality of acoustic signals and the plurality of pressure signals comprise information associated with the drilling of the borehole and the plurality of acoustic signals and the plurality of pressure signals are offset by a time period;
- receiving, by a noise reduction system, the plurality of acoustic signals and the plurality of pressure signals;
- determining, by the noise reduction system, the time period;
- shifting either the plurality of acoustic signals or the plurality of pressure signals by the time period to generate a plurality of phase shifted signals;
- applying the plurality of phase shifted signals to the plurality of acoustic signals or the plurality of pressure signals that has not been phase shifted;
- and
- canceling noise from the plurality of acoustic signals or the plurality of pressure signals, or both.
