Adjusting a resonant frequency of a scanning mirror

A display device, comprising:

• control circuitry comprising a tuning driver, a phase detector, and an oscillating driver;
• a light source;
• and
• a scanning mirror system comprising
• a scanning mirror attached to a frame via a flexure, the scanning mirror configured to be driven by the oscillating driver at a resonant frequency of the scanning mirror and thereby scan light from the light source in at least one direction at the resonant frequency, and
• an electromechanical actuator system coupled with the scanning mirror and being controllable by the tuning driver to adjust the resonant frequency of the scanning mirror, the electromechanical actuator system comprising an actuator that spans a corresponding gap, the gap being formed in the frame and spaced away from the flexure, the actuator being configured to apply one or more of a contractive force across the gap to thereby increase a tension in the flexure and increase the resonant frequency of the scanning mirror, and a dilative force across the gap to thereby decrease the tension in the flexure and decrease the resonant frequency of the scanning mirror, wherein the control circuitry is configured to compare via the phase detector a signal indicative of a video frame rate and a signal indicative of the resonant frequency, the comparing by the phase detector being performed after performing an adjustment to permit the comparing of the signal indicative of the video frame rate and the signal indicative of the resonant frequency, and to provide a signal to the tuning driver based on comparing the signal indicative of the video frame rate with the signal indicative of the resonant frequency.
