Abstract
Embodiments of the disclosure encompass compositions and methods for the treatment of medical conditions in which increases in GLP-1 are beneficial to an individual. In specific embodiments, the disclosure concerns certain peptides that are capable of inducing GLP-1 production in an individual with a medical condition, such as type II diabetes or obesity. In other cases, an individual is not obese or overweight but is provided the peptide in an effort to reduce weight from fat.
Claims7
A method of treating a medical condition in an individual having insufficient levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), comprising the step of administering to the individual a therapeutically effective amount of a peptide comprising MAADIISTIGDLVKWIIDTVNKFKK (SEQ ID NO:1), or a functionally active fragment or derivative thereof;
- wherein the functionally active fragment comprises at least the amino acids between, and including, positions 3-24 of SEQ ID NO:1;
- wherein the derivative comprises only conservative amino acid substitutions to SEQ ID NO:1, wherein the medical condition is obesity, type II diabetes, being overweight, Metabolic syndrome, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), short bowel syndrome, or a combination thereof.
A method of treating a medical condition in an individual having insufficient levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), comprising the step of administering to the individual a therapeutically effective amount of a peptide comprising MAADIISTIGDLVKWIIDTVNKFKK (SEQ ID NO:1), or a derivative thereof;
- wherein the derivative comprises only conservative amino acid changes to SEQ ID NO:
- 1 and does not have an alteration in the underlined positions of SEQ ID NO:
- 1 as follows:
- MAADIISTIGDLVKWIIDTVNKFKK, wherein the medical condition is obesity, type II diabetes, being overweight, Metabolic syndrome, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), short bowel syndrome, or a combination thereof.
