A process for the preparation of 1,2-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)diazene (III), which comprises reacting 2,6-dimethylaniline of Formula (II) with KMnO4 in an aprotic solvent dialkyl ketone with a boiling point greater than about 55° C.;
