Forward compatible new radio sidelink slot format signalling

A method, comprising:

• receiving, by a system comprising a processor, a first message over a sidelink that comprises a slot format, wherein the slot format comprises a first release parameter, a group of orthogonal frequency division multiplexed symbols, a group of slots and a transmit period;
• determining, by the system, whether the first release parameter matches a second release parameter stored in a memory;
• in response to the determining indicating that the first release parameter matched the second release parameter, updating, by the system, a resource map used to transmit data, resulting in an updated resource map;
• and
• generating, by the system, a second message wherein the second message comprises the slot format.

A machine-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

• receiving a slot format, wherein the slot format comprises a first release parameter, a group of orthogonal frequency division multiplexed symbols, a group of slots and a transmit period;
• determining whether the first release parameter matches a second release parameter stored in memory;
• in response to the determining indicating that the first release parameter matched the second release parameter, updating a resource map based on the group of orthogonal frequency division multiplexed symbols and the group of slots, resulting in an updated resource map;
• and
• transmitting a message wherein the message comprises the slot format.
