Abstract
Methods and devices for accurate noninvasive measurement of blood analyte concentrations are disclosed. In an example process, optical properties of a blood vessel proximate to the surface of an exposed body part, for example, the sclera or the backside of the eye lid, is measured. Analyte concentrations are determined based on the measured optical properties.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- determining, by a processing system, a first light-absorption profile for a first tissue area that is predetermined to not include a blood vessel;
- determining, by the processing system, a second light-absorption profile for a second tissue area that is predetermined to include the blood vessel,
- wherein the first tissue area is laterally offset from the second tissue area relative to an axis of a light beam projected on the first tissue area, and
- wherein the determined first and second absorption profiles include light-absorption data for an absorption wavelength associated with a blood analyte of interest;
- generating, by the processing system, a differential absorption profile by subtracting the first absorption profile from the second absorption profile so as to remove noise due to tissue around the blood vessel;
- and
- determining, by the processing system, a relative concentration of the blood analyte of interest based on the differential absorption profile.

A non-invasive analyte detection device comprising:
- a multiple-wavelength light source configured to illuminate a first tissue area that is predetermined to include a blood vessel, and a second tissue area that is predetermined to exclude the blood vessel,
- wherein the first and second tissue areas are non-overlapping, and wherein the first tissue area is laterally offset from the second tissue area relative to an axis of a light beam projected from the multiple- wavelength light source;
- a light detector configured to detect light from the first tissue area and the second tissue area;
- and a processor configured to:
- determine a first light-absorption profile based on light detected from the first tissue area;
- determine a second light-absorption profile based on light detected from the second tissue area, wherein the second absorption profile is not based on the light from the blood vessel, and wherein the determined first and second absorption profiles include light-absorption data for an absorption wavelength associated with a blood analyte of interest;
- generate a differential absorption profile by subtracting the second absorption profile from the first absorption profile so as to remove noise due to tissue around the blood vessel;
- and determine a relative concentration of the blood analyte of interest based on the differential absorption profile.

A method comprising:
- identifying a first tissue area that is predetermined to include a blood vessel, and identifying a second tissue area that is predetermined to exclude the blood vessel,
- wherein the first tissue area is at a same depth as the second tissue area and the first tissue area is laterally offset from the second tissue area;
- using one or more light detectors to detect light from the first and second tissue areas;
- determining, by a processing system, a first light-absorption profile for the first tissue area, wherein the first light-absorption profile is based at least in part on light reflected from or transmitting through the blood vessel;
- determining, by the processing system, a second light-absorption profile for the second tissue area, wherein the second absorption profile is not based on the light reflected from or transmitting through the blood vessel of the first tissue area, and
- wherein the determined first and second absorption profiles include light-absorption data for an absorption wavelength associated with a blood analyte of interest;
- generating, by the processing system, a differential absorption profile by subtracting the second absorption profile from the first absorption profile so as to remove noise due to tissue around the blood vessel;
- and
- determining, by the processing system, a relative concentration of the blood analyte of interest based on the differential absorption profile.
