Abstract
The present disclosure relates to compositions and methods for treating retinal damage and/or retinal degradation. More specifically, this disclosure relates to methods for treating degradation of the retinal pigment epithelium by administering compositions comprising a nucleoside and/or a nucleoside or nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor.

A method of treating a condition selected from Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a compound selected from:
- (i) a compound having the structure of formula I
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof;
- (ii) a compound having the structure of formula II
- (iii) a compound having the structure of formula III, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof;
- (iv) a compound having the structure of formula IV,
- wherein n is 10 to 20;
- (v) a compound having the structure of formula V
- (vi) stavudine (d4T);
- (vii) lamivudine (3TC);
- (viii) cordycepin;
- (ix) azidothymidine (AZT);
- (x) abacavir (ABC);
- and
- (xi) a combination thereof.
