Abstract
A photovoltaic system includes a collection of photovoltaic modules, a base supporting the collection of photovoltaic modules, and a damper coupled between the collection of photovoltaic modules and the base. The damper resists movement of the photovoltaic modules relative to the base. The damper has a first damping ratio when the collection of photovoltaic modules moves at a first rate relative to the base and a second damping ratio when the collection of photovoltaic modules moves at a second rate relative to the base, and the damper passively transitions from the first damping ratio to the second damping ratio.

A method for damping movement of a photovoltaic system supported by a base, the method comprising:
- moving, by an actuator coupled between a collection of photovoltaic modules and the base, the collection of photovoltaic modules relative to the base to track sun movement, the collection of photovoltaic modules moving at a first rate relative to the base when the collection of photovoltaic modules is under a first loading condition, the first loading condition corresponding to a first range of load magnitudes and the collection of photovoltaic modules moving at a second rate relative to the base under a second loading condition, the second loading condition corresponding to a second range of load magnitudes;
- and
- damping, by a damper, the movement of the collection of photovoltaic modules relative to the base, the damper coupled to the collection of photovoltaic modules relative to the base, the damper providing a first damping ratio when the collection of photovoltaic modules is under the first loading condition and a second damping ratio when the collection of photovoltaic modules is under the second loading condition;
- wherein the damper comprises:
- a damper chamber;
- and
- a damper piston movable through an inside of the damper chamber, the damper piston including:
- a first port having a first diameter;
- a second port having a second diameter, the second diameter larger than the first diameter;
- and
- a valve, configured to open or close the second port such that the second port is open when the collection of photovoltaic modules move at the first rate relative to the base and the second port is closed when the collection of photovoltaic modules move at the second rate relative to the base.
A method for damping movement of a photovoltaic system, the method comprising:
- moving, by an actuator, a collection of photovoltaic modules to track sun movement;
- and
- damping, by a damper coupled to the photovoltaic modules, the movement of the photovoltaic modules,
- wherein the damper comprises:
- a damper chamber containing a fluid;
- and
- a damper piston movable through the fluid inside the damper chamber, the damper piston including:
- a first port having a first diameter;
- a second port having a second diameter, the second diameter larger than the first diameter;
- and
- a valve, configured to passively open or close the second port, the valve configured to open the second port when an environmental loading condition is applied to the photovoltaic modules, the environmental loading condition corresponding to load magnitudes that are greater than load magnitudes applied to the photovoltaic modules when the photovoltaic modules are not experiencing the environmental loading condition.
A method for damping movement of a photovoltaic system, the method comprising:
- moving, by an actuator coupled to a collection of photovoltaic modules, the photovoltaic modules to track sun movement;
- and
- damping, by a damper coupled to the photovoltaic modules, the movement of the photovoltaic modules, the damper providing greater damping when a greater loading condition is applied to the photovoltaic modules than when a smaller loading condition is applied to the photovoltaic modules, the greater loading condition corresponding to a first range of load magnitudes and the smaller loading condition corresponding to a second range of load magnitudes;
- wherein the damper comprises:
- a damper chamber containing a fluid;
- and
- a damper piston movable through the fluid inside the damper chamber, the damper piston including:
- a first port having a first diameter;
- a second port having a second diameter, the second diameter larger than the first diameter;
- and
- a valve, configured to passively open or close the second port.
