Managing virtual machine instances utilizing a virtual offload device

A computer-implemented method comprising:

• receiving, by an offload computing device, configuration instructions from a control plane manager;
• establishing communication between the offload computing device and a computing device, wherein the computing device hosts a virtual machine instance and virtual computing resources of the virtual machine instance are instantiated using hardware computing resources of the computing device;
• and
• instantiating a virtual input/output (I/O) component using hardware computing resources of the offload computing device, wherein the virtual I/O component is configured to emulate one or more physical I/O components for the virtual machine instance hosted on the computing device,
• wherein the virtual machine instance and the virtual I/O component are instantiated based at least in part on the configuration instructions.

An offload computing device comprising:

• one or more processors, wherein the offload computing device is configured to communicate with a physical computing device, wherein the one or more processors execute computer-readable instructions that configure the offload computing device to:
• receive configuration instructions from a control plane manager;
• instantiate a virtual input/output (I/O) component configured to emulate one or more physical I/O components for a virtual machine instance hosted on the physical computing device at least by performing I/O functions on behalf of the virtual machine instance,
• wherein virtual computing resources of the virtual machine instance are instantiated using hardware computing resources of the physical computing device, wherein the virtual machine instance and the virtual I/O component are instantiated based at least in part on the configuration instructions.
