Abstract
A vehicle body may have an internal skeleton, and a skin fabricated in-situ over the internal skeleton. The skin may include a matrix material, and a plurality of continuous fibers encased within the matrix material. The plurality of continuous fibers may include at least one electrically conductive wire interwoven with others of the plurality of continuous fibers. The at least one electrically conductive wire may be configured to function as at least one of a heater and a strain gauge.
Claims19
A vehicle body, comprising:
- an internal skeleton;
- and
- a skin fabricated in-situ over the internal skeleton, the skin including:
- a matrix material;
- and
- a plurality of continuous fibers encased within the matrix material, wherein the plurality of continuous fibers includes at least one electrically conductive wire interwoven with others of the plurality of continuous fibers and configured to function as at least one of a heater and a strain gauge,
- wherein the matrix material includes multiple resins deposited at strategic locations along a length of the plurality of continuous fibers in the skin.

A vehicle body, comprising:
- an internal skeleton;
- and
- a skin formed over the internal skeleton, the skin including:
- a matrix material;
- a plurality of continuous structural fibers encased within the matrix material;
- and
- at least one of an electrically conductive wire, a shape memory fiber, and a fiber optic interwoven with the plurality of continuous structural fibers;
- wherein at least some of the plurality of continuous structural fibers of the skin extend into and form a portion of the internal skeleton.
5 more elements
A vehicle body, comprising:
- an internal skeleton;
- and
- a skin chemically bonded to the internal skeleton, the skin including:
- a matrix material;
- and
- a plurality of continuous fibers encased within the matrix material, wherein the plurality of continuous fibers includes a plurality of structural fibers that extend into and form a portion of the internal skeleton and at least one functional fiber interwoven with the plurality of structural fibers.
