An alcohol-wood extract for lowering cholesterol level of blood serum in a mammal, said extract comprising an extraction solution and a lignan mixture at a range of 1-50 wt-%, the lignan mixture comprising:

• 70-80 wt-% 7-hydroxymatairesinol, 3-8 wt-% conidendrin, 1-4 wt-% lariciresinol, 2-5 wt-% liovil, 3-7 wt-% secoisolarisinol, and 0-3 wt-% other lignans.
