Abstract
A collapsible runway side barrier for preventing foreign object debris (FOD) from entering a runway and taxiway. The barrier may have an aerodynamic profile, one side of the barrier profile may be convex and the other side of the barrier profile may be concave. The side barrier may further have ground attachment elements and may be constructed to collapse if the landing wheels of an aircraft impact the barrier.
Claims24
A method for preventing foreign object debris (FOD) from entering a runway of an airport, comprising:
- providing a barrier comprising a sheet constructed to crush under pressure of an aircraft landing wheel;
- installing the barrier, including attaching the barrier to the ground, along a side of the runway, such that the sheet gradually ascends from a low point closest to an airplane route on the runway to an upper point of the barrier, in a manner which prevents foreign object debris from entering the runway and allows blowing FOD out of the runway over the barrier;
- and
- allowing airplanes to take off and land while the barrier is installed along the side of the runway.
