Controlling the braking of a vehicle descending a slope

A system for controlling the braking of a vehicle having a plurality of wheels, the system comprising an electronic processor configured to:

• receive one or more signals each indicative of a value of a respective vehicle-related parameter;
• detect that the vehicle is descending a slope based on the value(s) of one or more of the vehicle-related parameter(s);
• receive one or more signals each indicative of a respective terrain type and determine, based on the one or more signals indicative of terrain type, the type of terrain the vehicle is traversing;
• and
• command a modification in an amount of brake torque being applied to at least certain of the wheels of the vehicle in response to the detection of the vehicle descending a slope and the determined terrain type being one of one or more particular terrain types, by commanding an increase in the amount of brake torque being applied to one or more trailing wheels of the vehicle, and a decrease in the amount of brake torque being applied to one or more leading wheels of the vehicle.

An electronic controller for a vehicle having a plurality of wheels, the controller having a storage medium associated therewith storing instructions that when executed by the controller causes the control of the braking of the vehicle in accordance with the method of:

• receiving one or more electrical signals each indicative of a value of a respective vehicle-related parameter;
• detecting that the vehicle is descending a slope based on the value(s) of one or more of the vehicle-related parameter(s);
• determining the type of terrain the vehicle is traversing;
• and
• when the terrain is one of one or more particular terrain types, automatically modifying an amount of brake torque being applied to at least certain of the wheels of the vehicle in response to the detection of the vehicle descending a slope by increasing the amount of brake torque being applied to one or more trailing wheels of the vehicle, and decreasing the amount of brake torque being applied to one or more leading wheels of the vehicle.
