Method and system for performance measurement of a communication link

A system for performance measurement, the system comprising:

• a network;
• and
• a first communication device communicatively coupled to a second communication device via the network, the first communication device operable to:
• execute active probing on a physical layer to transmit active probing data by the first communication device, wherein the active probing data are not received at communication layer 3 or above at the second communication device, the first communication device is operable to read operational data associated with the communication link in response to executing active probing, the operational data comprising data generated by active probing on the communication link, wherein the operational data relates to information regarding a configuration of a layer 1 or layer 2 of the communication link;
• and
• measure throughput, by the first communication device, of the network.
