Abstract
Xanthan gum has been found to be a superior binder for binding an electrode, especially an anode, in a lithium-ion or lithium-sulfur battery, being able to accommodate large volume changes and providing stable capacities in batteries tested with different types of anode materials.
Claims15
An electrode consisting essentially of:
- an electrode active material into which lithium is intercalated, a conductive carbon, and a binder;
- wherein the electrode active material is an oxide, or a homogeneous matrix of an oxide and a conductive carbon, and wherein the binder comprises xanthan gum.
An anode for a lithium-ion or lithium-sulfur battery comprising a lithium-containing material bound by a binder, the binder consisting essentially of xanthan gum.
