Systems and methods for estimating angle of arrival in a wireless device

An apparatus comprising:

• a transceiver configured to couple to a first antenna, the transceiver to provide a first phase value of a first radio frequency (RF) signal received from a source through a first antenna during a first period and provide a first phase value of a second RF signal received from the source through the first antenna during a second period;
• a switching circuit configured to switch between being coupled to each of a plurality of antennas including a second antenna and a third antenna;
• a partial receiver coupled to the switching circuit, the partial receiver configured to provide a second phase value of the first RF signal received from the source through the second antenna during the first period and provide a second phase value of the second RF signal received from the source through the third antenna during a second period;
• a direction estimator coupled to the transceiver and the partial receiver, the direction estimator configured to estimate an angle of arrival associated with the first and second RF signals based on the first and second phase values of the first RF signal and the first and second phase values of the second RF signal;
• and
• a regulator coupled to the transceiver, the partial receiver, and the direction estimator, the regulator to determine a phase difference between a first phase offset introduced by a first oscillator of the transceiver and a second phase offset introduced by a second oscillator of the of the partial receiver, wherein the direction estimator is configured to compensate for the determined phase difference to estimate the angle of arrival.

A wireless device comprising:

• an antenna array including a first antenna, a second antenna, and a third antenna;
• a first receive path coupled to a first oscillator and to the first antenna, the first receive path including a demodulator to demodulate radio frequency (RF) signals received through the first antenna from a source;
• a coupling circuity configured to couple the first antenna to the first receive path and to alternately couple to the second antenna and the third antenna;
• a second receive path coupled to a second oscillator and to the coupling circuit, the second receive path including a phase estimator to provide phase estimations associated with RF signals received through the second antenna and the third antenna from the source;
• a regulator coupled to the first oscillator and the second oscillator and configured to concurrently couple the first antenna to the first receive path and to the second receive path to synchronize a first phase offset introduced by the first oscillator with a second phase offset introduced by the second oscillator;
• and
• processing circuitry configured to cause the coupling circuit to couple to the second antenna during a first period and to couple to the third antenna during a second period, the processing circuitry to estimate a direction of a source of first and second RF signals relative to the antenna array, based on a first phase difference of the first RF signal between the first antenna and the second antenna and a second phase difference of the second RF signal between the first antenna and the third antenna.
