Abstract
An exemplary surgical device includes an element positionable within a shaft having a lumen defined therethrough with the element movable from a stored position to a deployed position in which a larger portion of the element extends out of the distal end of the lumen. The element forming a closed loop which is positioned around the lens while the lens is within a capsular bag. The closed loop is reduced in size to form a cut in the lens.
Claims16
A method of cutting a lens within a capsular bag of an eye, the lens having a posterior surface and an anterior surface, the method comprising:
- positioning a first portion of a cutting element of a device over the anterior surface of the lens with the cutting element in a first configuration, a second portion of the cutting element positioned within a lumen in a shaft of the device;
- extending the second portion of the cutting element out of the lumen so that the cutting element expands toward a second configuration, the second configuration comprising an approximately closed loop formed entirely by the cutting element, said approximately closed loop having a first open area, wherein the first open area comprises a first, larger inner radius of curvature, a second, smaller inner radius of curvature, and wherein the approximately closed loop formed entirely by the cutting element extends both distally of a distal-most portion of the shaft and proximally of the distal-most portion of the shaft;
- advancing the cutting element between the lens and the capsular bag so as to capture a portion of the lens within the first open area of the cutting element;
- and
- tensioning the cutting element to cut the lens.
A method of cutting a lens within a capsular bag of an eye, the method comprising:
- introducing a cutting element into an anterior chamber of the eye, the cutting element being introduced into an anterior chamber of the eye while in a first configuration with at least a portion of the cutting element positioned within a lumen of a shaft;
- positioning the cutting element in the first configuration over an anterior surface of the lens and through an opening in the capsular bag, while the lens remains inside the capsular bag;
- extending the portion of the cutting element from the lumen to move the cutting element from the first configuration to a second configuration comprising an unbiased shape,
- wherein, as the portion of the cutting element extends from the lumen, the cutting element forms a shape, said shape comprising an open area that increases in size as the cutting element moves toward the second configuration;
- advancing the cutting element between the capsular bag and the anterior surface of the lens as the cutting element moves toward the unbiased shape of the second configuration;
- positioning the cutting element in the second configuration around a portion of the lens between a posterior portion of the capsular bag and a posterior surface of the lens;
- and
- tensioning the cutting element so that the lens is cut.
