Abstract
An apparatus for manipulating a material is provided. The apparatus may comprise one or more stator coils arranged in a three-dimensional configuration, and a surface on which at least one carrier is configured to move. The stator coils of the apparatus may be configured to generate an electromagnetic field for driving the carrier on the surface to manipulate a material.

An apparatus comprising:
- a magnetic device array arranged on a tessellated icosahedral grid in a three-dimensional partially enclosed field, wherein the three-dimensional partially enclosed field is selected from a group consisting of a spherical configuration and a polyhedral configuration;
- and
- a surface on which at least one carrier is configured to move,
- wherein the magnetic device array is configured to provide a magnetic field for driving the carrier on the surface to manipulate a material.

A method of actuating a carrier, comprising:
- providing a magnetic device array arranged on a tessellated icosahedral grid in a three-dimensional partially enclosed field, wherein the three-dimensional partially enclosed field is selected from a group consisting of a spherical configuration and a polyhedral configuration;
- providing a surface on which the carrier is configured to move;
- and
- driving the carrier on the surface to manipulate a material, via a magnetic field provided by the magnetic device array.
