Moving nodes in a distributed system

A system, comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• memory including executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause a computer system to at least:
• determine, using a fitness function based at least in part on one or more network performance metrics and one or more constraint parameters, one or more fitness values, associated with migrating a first communication node of a network to one or more new locations within the network, wherein the fitness function aggregates one or more of the network performance metrics and one or more of the constraint parameters into a value, wherein the one or more constraint parameters place one or more restrictions on at least one of the number or frequency of migrations;
• select a candidate location from the one or more new locations for the first communication node, the candidate location selected based at least in part on the one or more new locations satisfying one or more placement improvement criteria that are based at least in part on the one or more fitness values;
• migrate the first communication node to the candidate location;
• and
• as a result of determining that the migration of the first communication node does not improve the one or more placement improvement criteria, at least:
• perform one or more operations that result in the first communication node being migrated to a second candidate location of the one or more new locations within the network.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon executable instructions that, as a result of execution by one or more processors of a computer system, cause the computer system to at least:

• determine, using a fitness function based at least in part on one or more system metrics between pairs of communication nodes in a set of communication nodes of a network and one or more migration constraint parameters, one or more fitness values associated with placing one or more communication nodes of the set of communication nodes in one or more locations within the network, wherein the fitness function aggregates one or more of the one or more system metrics and one or more of the migration constraint parameters into a value, wherein the one or more migration constraint parameters place one or more restrictions on the placing that limit the number of times the one or more communication nodes are migrated;
• place one or more of the one or more communication nodes in the set of communication nodes in a new location within the network, the new location based at least in part on satisfying one or more placement improvement criteria that are based at least in part on the one or more fitness values;
• and
• as a result of determining the placement of the one or more of the one or more communication nodes in a new location within the network does not improve the one or more placement improvement criteria, at least:
• perform one or more operations that result in one or more of the one or more communication nodes being migrated to a second location of the one or more locations.
