Implantable device with optical lead

An implantable active medical device system comprising:

• an active medical device;
• a lead extending between a proximal portion electrically coupled to the active medical device and a distal end portion configured to emit light, the distal end portion comprising:
• a solid state light source disposed within a light transmissive ring element, the light transmissive ring element forming an exterior segment of the distal end portion, the light transmissive ring element defining at least a portion of a hermetic cavity;
• wherein the lead distal end portion further comprises a plurality of solid state light sources and a plurality of light transmissive ring elements, wherein each light transmissive ring element surrounds one of the solid state light sources forming a transmissive ring and light source pair, and each transmissive ring and light source pair is spaced apart from an adjacent transmissive ring and light source pair by an electrode ring element.

An implantable active medical device system comprising:

• an active medical device;
• a lead extending between a proximal portion electrically coupled to the active medical device and a distal end portion configured to emit light, the distal end portion comprising:
• a solid state light source disposed within a light transmissive ring element, the light transmissive ring element forming an exterior segment of the distal end portion, the light transmissive ring element defining at least a portion of a hermetic cavity and
• an electrode ring element forming an exterior segment of the distal end portion and hermetically bonded to the light transmissive ring element;
• wherein the lead distal end portion comprises a plurality of alternating transmissive rings and electrode ring elements forming an exterior surface of the distal end portion, and a light source disposed within each transmissive ring, wherein each light source is activated independently of each other.
