Energy management system for a data center network

A computer program product embodied in a non-transitory tangible medium comprising:

• computer readable program codes coupled to the non-transitory tangible medium to improve energy consumption of a computer data center network, the computer readable program codes configured to cause the program to:
• establish an energy use policy for a computer data center network and collect energy costs from a plurality of utilities provisioning energy to the computer data center network;
• transmit a packet to computer nodes in the computer data center network that includes a query to obtain current draw information from the computer nodes and a transmission reservation to provide instructions for the energy use policy to be implemented at the computer nodes;
• determine an optimal utilities configuration for the plurality of utilities provisioning energy to the computer data center network that yields an optimal energy consumption for the computer data center network based on the energy costs and the energy use policy;
• reallocate data traffic on the computer data center network based on the optimal utilities configuration.
