Display device and display device drive method

A driving display method to be executed by a display device including an image display panel divided into a plurality of areas including a first divided area and a second divided area, a backlight and a display controller, display of the image display panel being controlled on the basis of an image signal, the backlight including a plurality of light sources including a first light source corresponding to the first divided area and a second light source corresponding to the second divided area adjacent to the first light source and lighting the image display panel from behind, the display controller controlling the first light source and the second light source, the driving display method comprising:

• setting, by the display controller, an upper limit value of lighting levels of the first light source and the second light source,
• calculating a first required luminance value for the first light source divided area and a second required luminance value for the second light source divided area on the basis of the image signal of the first divided area and the second divided area,
• setting, by the display controller, a first lighting level of the first light source to the upper limit value when the first required luminance value exceeds the upper limit value,
• increasing, by the display controller, a second lighting level of the second light source on the basis of the first lighting level and the image signal of the first divided area and the second divided area to satisfy the first required luminance value when the second required luminance value does not exceed the upper limit value, and
• setting, by the display controller, the second lighting level to the upper limit value when the second required luminance value exceeds the upper limit value.
