Smart restrict mode for data definition statements

A system comprising:

• an interface, implemented by one or more hardware processors, configured to receive a data definition statement involving a modification to a database object stored in a database, the data definition statement including a clause imposing a restriction on the modification to the database object based on whether the modification results in invalidation of at least one dependent database object of the database object;
• a parser, implemented by the one or more hardware processors, configured to determine whether the modification results in invalidation of at least one dependent database object of the database object in response to the clause being included in the data definition statement, the parser being configured to determine whether the modification results in the invalidation of the at least one dependent database object by performing operations including determining whether the at least one dependent database object is able to be successfully recompiled as a result of the modification;
• and
• a statement processor implemented by the one or more hardware processors, configured to prevent the modification to the database object based on determining that the modification results in the invalidation of the at least one dependent database object;
• the statement processor further to perform the modification to the database object based on determining that the modification does not result in the invalidation of the at least one dependent database object.
