Vibration sensing system and method for categorizing portable device context and modifying device operation

A method for operating a portable electronic device, the method comprising:

• receiving, at a processor of the portable electronic device, signals from at least two of a plurality of sensors configured to detect contacts on an enclosure of the portable electronic device;
• identifying, by the processor of the portable electronic device, a property of at least one of the at least two received signals;
• using at least the identified property to determine a holding state of the electronic device, the holding state comprising a grip on the enclosure by a user;
• and
• determining a position of the grip on the enclosure.

An electronic device comprising:

• a memory;
• an enclosure defining a touch-sensitive surface;
• a processor configured to receive at least two signals from the touch-sensitive surface;
• wherein the memory stores instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
• determine, using the received signals, that a pressure is applied to the touch-sensitive surface;
• determine a level of the pressure applied to the touch-sensitive surface;
• determine that a user is applying a grip to the electronic device using at least the determined level of pressure applied to the touch-sensitive surface;
• and
• modify an operation of the electronic device, the modification being responsive to the level of the pressure applied to the touch-sensitive surface.
