Abstract
Systems and methods for stimulating a neuronal cell in the head of a patient in need of such stimulation are disclosed. The method includes positioning a light source proximal to the neuronal cell to be stimulated and pulsing the light from the light source to stimulate the neuronal cell for a predetermined period of time to achieve the desired effect.
Claims32
A method of treating a symptom of a headache-related medical condition, including a headache and/or a pain from a headache-related condition, in a patient, the method comprising:
- providing a controller coupled to a light source and capable of being configured to be coupled to at least one electrode, a signal from the at least one electrode is used for generation of an electroencephalogram;
- positioning the light source proximal to a neuronal cell to be stimulated, wherein the light source is temporarily, without surgical intervention or suturing, placed in a nasal cavity of the patient, wherein proximate positioning includes at least one of the following:
- touching a mucosal tissue over the neuronal cell and touching the neuronal cell;
- pulsing a light, using a predetermined frequency, a predetermined low power, and a wavelength of approximately 300 nanometers to approximately 1200 nanometers, from the light source, for a predetermined period of time or a period of time based on a feedback from at least one of the following:
- a trigeminal evoked response data, and an electroencephalogram data;
- the predetermined frequency includes at least one of the following:
- a range of 10 cycles per second (Hz) to 20 cycles per second (Hz), and a frequency of less than 1 cycle per second (Hz);
- controlling, using the controller, an output of the light source based on at least one of the following in combination with a predetermined output of light:
- an evoked response of the patient, a trigeminal nerve evoked response, the electroencephalogram, and any combination thereof;
- stimulating, using the pulsed light, the neuronal cell, to treat the headache-related medical condition, for a predetermined period of time to provide treatment of the symptom of the headache-related medical condition of the patient, the stimulating including changing at least one property of at least one function of the neuronal cell, wherein the changing of the at least one property includes at least one of the following:
- quenching the neuronal cell, kindling the neuronal cell, affecting homeostatic information transmission, and any combination thereof;
- stopping the stimulating after a predetermined period of time or based on at least one of the following:
- the evoked response of the patient, the trigeminal nerve evoked response, the electroencephalogram, and any combination thereof.
A method of treating a symptom of a headache-related medical condition, including a headache and/or a pain from a headache-related condition, in a patient, comprising:
- providing a controller coupled to a light source and capable of being configured to be coupled to at least one electrode, a signal from the at least one electrode is used for generation of an electroencephalogram;
- temporarily placing the light source in a nasal cavity of the patient, wherein a tip of the light source is positioned proximate to a neuronal cell in a head of the patient, the light source being focused on a narrowly defined area, the narrowly defined area including the neuronal cell in a head of the patient, the proximate positioning includes at least one of the following:
- touching a mucosal tissue over the neuronal cell and touching the neuronal cell;
- generating a pulsed light from the light source, using a predetermined frequency, a predetermined low power, and a wavelength of approximately 300 nanometers to approximately 1200 nanometers, to stimulate the neuronal cell, to treat the headache-related medical condition, for a predetermined period of time or a period of time based on a feedback from at least one of the following:
- a trigeminal evoked response data, and an electroencephalogram data;
- the predetermined frequency includes at least one of the following:
- a range of 10 cycles per second (Hz) to 20 cycles per second (Hz), and a frequency of less than 1 cycle per second (Hz);
- and
- controlling, using a controller coupled to the light source, stimulation of the neuronal cell, thereby providing treatment of the symptom of the headache-related medical condition in the patient, the controller controls an output of the light source based on at least one of the following in combination with a predetermined output of light:
- an evoked response of the patient, a trigeminal nerve evoked response, the electroencephalogram, and any combination thereof;
- wherein the stimulating includes changing at least one property of at least one function of the neuronal cell, wherein the changing of the at least one property includes at least one of the following:
- quenching the neuronal cell, kindling the neuronal cell, affecting homeostatic information transmission, and any combination thereof;
- providing a controller coupled to a light source and capable of being configured to be coupled to at least one electrode, a signal from the at least one electrode is used for generation of an electroencephalogram;
- temporarily placing the light source in a nasal cavity of the patient;
- advancing the light source inside the nasal cavity to position the light source proximate to a neuronal cell to be stimulated, the proximate positioning includes at least one of the following:
- touching a mucosal tissue over the neuronal cell and touching the neuronal cell;
