Abstract
Low-cost, easy-to-use alignment target generators for aligning a user's own face or eye to a camera or scanner are based on field-of-view visual feedback from a filtered or apertured planar light source. These approaches may be made agnostic to the scanner's operating system or other software. Alternatively, software on the scanner or its host device may create a solid light-colored section of an existing display screen to use as a planar light source. In some embodiments, the planar light source may be the virtual image of an object viewed in a plane mirror.
Claims17
A system, comprising:
- a biometric measurement device to measure a biometric trait of a user positioned with an eye at an aligned eye position;
- and
- an alignment target generator comprising an optical train that alters light from a planar light source such that an aligned eye at the aligned eye position sees a first pattern or a first color from the light;
- wherein the optical train comprises at least one of:
- a beam blocker having an annular aperture of uniform width, a window having a plurality of sectors with each sector having a different transmission spectrum, a plurality of waveguides at angles that converge toward the aligned eye position, or a plurality of mirrors tangent to a surface of a sphere concentric with the aligned eye position;
- wherein a misaligned eye is at a position that differs from the aligned eye position by more than a threshold and sees a second pattern or a second color from the light;
- and
- wherein the threshold is defined by a point at which vignetting of the user's eye is at a desired level.
A system, comprising:
- an electronic device having a planar self-illuminating screen mounted in a housing;
- a biometric scanner associated with the electronic device;
- and
- an alignment target generator that alters light generated by the planar self-illuminating screen such that an aligned eye at an aligned eye position sees a first pattern or a first color from the light and a misaligned eye at a position that differs from the aligned eye position by more than a threshold sees a second pattern or a second color from the light;
- wherein the alignment target generator comprises at least one of:
- a beam blocker having an annular aperture of uniform width, a window having a plurality of sectors with each sector having a different transmission spectrum, a plurality of waveguides at angles that converge toward the aligned eye position, or a plurality of mirrors tangent to a surface of a sphere concentric with the aligned eye position;
- and
- wherein the threshold is defined as a function of recognition of an authorized user of the electronic device by the biometric scanner.
