Method for connection establishment in a radio system relaying packet-switched traffic

A network part of a radio system relaying packet-switched traffic the network part being configured to:

• receive from a terminal information indicating that the terminal intends to send data to the network part;
• allocate a default amount of radio resources to the terminal;
• reserve one or more radio blocks for the terminal's control messages;
• inform the terminal about radio resources allocated to the terminal and query the terminal about the terminal's radio path characteristics on a specific frequency band supported by the terminal when informing the terminal about the default amount of allocated resources;
• receive a first control message from the terminal, the message comprising information about the terminal's radio path characteristics and information on whether there are additional radio path characteristics;
• and
• receive a second control message from the terminal, the message comprising information about the terminal's additional radio path characteristics.

A terminal communicating packet-switched traffic, the terminal comprising:

• a control unit and an associated transmitter and receiver configured to:
• send a packet channel request message to a network part;
• receive from the network part a packet uplink assignment message comprising information indicating radio resources allocated to the terminal and information requesting radio characteristics supported by the terminal;
• and
• send a packet resource request message comprising information indicating the radio characteristics and information indicating whether additional radio characteristics will be reported.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon, the instructions comprising:

• instructions to send a packet channel request message to a network part to indicate that a terminal intends to send data to the network part;
• instructions to receive from the network part a packet uplink assignment message comprising information indicating radio resources allocated to the terminal and information requesting radio characteristics supported by the terminal;
• instructions to send a packet resource request message comprising information indicating the radio characteristics and information indicating whether additional radio characteristics will be reported;
• and
• instructions to send an additional radio access capabilities message comprising information indicating the additional radio characteristics.

A method performed by a terminal communicating packet-switched traffic, the method comprising:

• sending to a network part a packet channel request message indicating that the terminal intends to send data to the network part;
• receiving from the network part a packet uplink assignment message comprising information indicating radio resources allocated to the terminal and information requesting radio characteristics supported by the terminal;
• and
• sending a packet resource request message comprising information indicating the radio characteristics and information indicating whether additional radio characteristics will be reported.

A network part communicating packet-switched traffic to a terminal, the network part comprising:

• a control unit and an associated transmitter and receiver configured to:
• receive a packet channel request message from the terminal;
• send to the terminal a packet uplink assignment message comprising information indicating radio resources allocated to the terminal and information requesting radio characteristics supported by the terminal;
• and
• receive a packet resource request message from the terminal comprising information indicating the radio characteristics and information indicating whether additional radio characteristics will be reported.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon, the instructions comprising:

• instructions to receive a packet channel request message from the terminal;
• instructions to send to the terminal a packet uplink assignment message comprising information indicating radio resources allocated to the terminal and information requesting radio characteristics supported by the terminal;
• and
• instructions to receive a packet resource request message from the terminal comprising information indicating the radio characteristics and information indicating whether additional radio characteristics will be reported.
