A two-component plasma for producing energy from fusion reactions within the plasma comprising:
- a bulk plasma of tritium ions and electrons having a substantially Maxwellian energy distribution, said electrons having a temperature of at least 4 keV;
- and
- an energetic deuteron population within said bulk plasma, said deuteron population being produced by injection of deuterium having an initial energy of at least 120 keV into said bulk plasma.
A method of producing a two-component plasma for producing energy from fusion reactions within the plasma in a magnetic confinement device comprising the steps of:
- producing a bulk plasma of tritium ions and electrons having a substantially Maxwellian energy distribution within the confinement device, said electrons having a temperature of at least 4 keV;
- and producing an energetic deuteron population within said bulk plasma by injecting deuterium into said bulk plasma, said deuterium having an initial energy of at least 120 keV.
Apparatus for producing a two-component plasma for producing energy from fusion reactions within the plasma in a stellarator-mirror magnetic confinement device comprising:
- means for producing a bulk plasma of tritium ions and electrons having a substantially Maxwellian energy distribution within the magnetic confinement device, said electrons having a temperature of at least 4 keV;
- and
- means for producing an energetic deuteron population within said bulk plasma, said means including means for injecting deuterium having an initial energy of at least 120 keV into the mirror portion of the magnetic confinement device.
