Abstract
The present disclosure relates to comb or brush polymers and, in some approaches, comb or brush polymers suitable for use as viscosity index improvers in lubricating oil compositions. The present disclosure further relates to oil compositions comprising such polymers. The disclosure also relates to brush polymer compositions derived from sulfur functionalized polydialkylsiloxane backbones and various (meth)acrylate monomers.
Claims11
A lubricating oil composition comprising:
- a major amount of a lubricating oil;
- a viscosity index improving polymer including a reaction product of an alkyl thiol functionalized polydialkylsiloxane of Formula I and (meth)acrylate monomers;
- wherein
- R is independently selected from a C1 to C6 alkyl hydrocarbon;
- X is a C1 to C10 alkylene;
- m is a positive integer and n is 0 or a positive integer, wherein m+n is an integer from 1 to 500, wherein m is at least about 3 percent of the quantity m+n, and the associated m and n moieties are randomly polymerized within the polydialkylsiloxane of Formula I;
- and
- each Q is independently a mercapto group or an organosulfur group;
- and
- the (meth)acrylate monomers include short chain alkyl (meth)acrylate monomers with alkyl chain lengths of 1 to 4 carbons and long chain alkyl (meth)acrylate monomers with alkyl chain lengths of 12 to 20 carbons.
