Field update of boot loader using regular device firmware update procedure

A method, comprising:

• implementing a boot loader module for a device;
• generating a binary image of the boot loader module;
• and
• combining the binary image of the boot loader module with a first firmware to form a boot loader update firmware,
• wherein the boot loader update firmware is operative to copy the binary image of the boot loader module from a second non-volatile memory of the device into a first non-volatile memory of the device, the first non-volatile memory of the device including a first chip of the device and the second non-volatile memory of the device including a second chip of the device,
• wherein the first firmware is operative to verify a version of the boot loader module before copying the binary image of the boot loader module into the first non-volatile memory of the device, and
• wherein after the boot loader update firmware copies the binary image of the boot loader module into the first non-volatile memory of the device, the boot loader update firmware is operative to copy a second firmware into the second non-volatile memory of the device.

A method, comprising:

• copying a boot loader update firmware into a first non-volatile memory of a device, the boot loader update firmware including a binary image of a boot loader module and a first firmware, the first non-volatile memory of the device including a first chip of the device;
• activating the boot loader update firmware;
• using the boot loader update firmware in the first non-volatile memory of the device to verify that the boot loader update firmware is signed using a recognized authentication key and copy the binary image of the boot loader module into a second non-volatile memory of the device, the second non-volatile memory of the device including a second chip of the device;
• after the boot loader update firmware copies the binary image of the boot loader module into the second non-volatile memory of the device, using the boot loader update firmware in the first non-volatile memory of the device to copy a second firmware into the first non-volatile memory of the device;
• and
• rebooting the device to use the boot loader module.
