Balloon catheter with polymeric balloon having a surface modified by a photoactivation reaction and method for making

A balloon catheter comprising a balloon made of a polymeric material, said balloon having a surface, characterised in that said surface comprises covalently bound groups of formula

• wherein:
• each R1 is independently H;
• R2 is selected from the group consisting of H and a Z group, wherein the Z group is selected from the group consisting of —C(O)NH—Ra, —S(O)2NH—Ra, and —P(O)2NH—Ra;
• wherein Ra of the Z group of R2 is a C1-C4 linear or branched saturated alkyl chain optionally substituted with one or more polar functional groups, or with a —(CF2)m—CF3 perfluoroalkyl group, wherein m is 1 to 70;
• or
• wherein Ra of the Z group of R2 is —(CHRCH2O)n—X, wherein n is 1 to 70, R is H or —CH3, and X is selected from the group consisting of H, a saturated branched or linear C1-C4 alkyl chain, and a —(CH2)p—O—(CH2)q—W group, wherein W is H, —CH3, or —NH2, and wherein p and q are independently 1 to 30;
• or
• wherein Ra of the Z group of R2 is a C1-C70 linear or branched saturated alkyl chain;
• and
• R3 is selected from —NO2 or a Z group selected from the group consisting of —C(O)NH—Ra, —S(O)2NH—Ra, and —P(O)2NH—Ra;
• wherein Ra of the Z group of R3 is a C1-C4 linear or branched saturated alkyl chain optionally substituted with one or more polar functional groups, or with a —(CF2)m—CF3 perfluoroalkyl group, wherein m is 1 to 70;
• or
• wherein Ra of the Z group of R3 is —(CHRCH2O)n—X, wherein n is 1 to 70, R is H or —CH3, and X is selected from the group consisting of H, a saturated branched or linear C1-C4 alkyl chain, and a —(CH2)p—O—(CH2)q—W group, wherein W is H, —CH3, or —NH2, and wherein p and q are independently 1 to 30.
