Abstract
The present invention provides modified metformin compounds, particularly mito-metformin compounds, and pharmaceutical compositions thereof. Methods of using the compounds to provide neuroprotection and in the treatment and/or prevention of neurodegenerative diseases are also described.

A method for providing a subject in need thereof with neuroprotection, comprising administering to said subject a neuroprotective composition which includes an effective amount of the mito-metformin compound of the following structure,
- wherein n is selected from the group consisting of one (1), five (5), nine (9), and eleven (11).
