Abstract
An apparatus for controlling fraud in a satellite signal delivery system. An apparatus in accordance with the present invention comprises a receive antenna for receiving at least one satellite signal, and a module, coupled to the receive antenna, for selectively delivering the at least one satellite signal to at least one receiver via an output of the module, wherein the module creates an association between the module and the at least one receiver upon installation of the at least one receiver to the output, such that the module delivers the at least one satellite signal to the at least one receiver only when the association is present.

An apparatus for controlling fraud in a signal delivery system, comprising:
- a module for selectively delivering at least one signal to at least one authorized receiver of a plurality of authorized receivers via an output of the module, wherein:
- the at least one signal comprises a signal for use in television programming;
- the module comprises a frequency translation module that receives the television programming from an antenna;
- the module is coupled to an outdoor unit (ODU) that is attached to a structure;
- each of the plurality of authorized receivers is registered to the module;
- and
- via the registration, the module is coupled to and uniquely paired with each of the plurality of authorized receivers upon installation of each authorized receiver to the output, such that the module:
- determines whether the unique pairing and the coupling for the at least one authorized receiver is present;
- delivers the at least one signal to the at least one authorized receiver only when the unique pairing and the coupling to the at least one authorized receiver is present;
- and
- wherein;
- the frequency translation module registers a configuration of a house as installed by an installer including registration serial numbers for the ODU, the frequency translation module, and the plurality of authorized receivers;
- and
- the configuration of the house is used to prevent the one or more authorized receivers from being moved to a new frequency translation module at another location.
A method of controlling fraud in a signal delivery system by selectively delivering video signals to an authorized receiver of a plurality of authorized receivers, comprising:
- registering each of the plurality of authorized receivers to a module, wherein via the registration, the module is uniquely paired to each authorized receiver through an interface;
- and
- the module controlling the flow of video signals to the authorized receiver by the module, the selective control based on the pairing to the authorized receiver and an identification (ID) number of the authorized receiver;
- the video signals comprise signals for use in television programming;
- the module comprises a frequency translation module that receives the television programming from an antenna;
- the module is coupled to an outdoor unit (ODU) that is attached to a structure;
- the frequency translation module registers a configuration of a house as installed by an installer including registration serial numbers for the ODU, the frequency translation module, and the plurality of authorized receivers;
- and
- the configuration of the house is used to prevent the one or more authorized receivers from being moved to a new frequency translation module at another location.
A fraud controlled signal delivery system, for selectively delivering video signals to at least one authorized receiver of a plurality of authorized receivers, comprising:
- input means for receiving a plurality of signals from an antenna, wherein the plurality of signals comprise signals for use in television programming;
- and
- controller means for selectively delivering at least one signal in the plurality of signals to at least one authorized receiver via an output of the controller means, wherein:
- the controller means is part of a frequency translation module (FTM);
- the FTM is coupled to an outdoor unit (ODU) that is attached to a structure;
- each of the plurality of authorized receivers is registered to the controller means;
- and
- via the registration, the controller means is uniquely paired with each of the plurality of authorized receivers upon installation of each of the plurality of authorized receivers to the output, such that the controller means:
- determines whether the unique pairing with the at least one authorized receiver is present;
- and
- delivers the at least one signal to the at least one authorized receiver only when the unique pairing between the controller means and the at least one authorized receiver is present;
- the frequency translation module registers a configuration of a house as installed by an installer including registration serial numbers for the ODU, the frequency translation module, and the plurality of authorized receivers;
- and
- the configuration of the house is used to prevent the one or more authorized receivers from being moved to a new frequency translation module at another location.
An apparatus for controlling fraud in a signal delivery system, comprising:
- a module for selectively delivering a signal to an authorized receiver of a plurality of authorized receivers via an output of the module, wherein:
- the signal comprises a satellite television programming signal;
- the module comprises a frequency translation module that receives the satellite television programming signal from an antenna;
- the module comprises a controller for controlling signal flow between the output of the module and the authorized receiver;
- the controller monitors a signal strength between the module and the authorized receiver to determine if a change in the signal strength has occurred;
- each of the plurality of authorized receivers is registered to the module;
- and
- via the registration, the module is coupled to and uniquely paired with each of the plurality of authorized receivers upon installation of each authorized receiver to the output, such that the module:
- determines whether the unique pairing and the coupling for the authorized receiver is present;
- and
- delivers the signal to the authorized receiver only when the unique pairing and the coupling to the authorized receiver is present.
A method of controlling fraud in a signal delivery system by selectively delivering video signals to an authorized receiver of a plurality of authorized receivers, comprising:
- registering each of the plurality of authorized receivers to a module, wherein via the registration, the module is uniquely paired to each authorized receiver through an interface;
- and
- the module controlling the flow of video signals to the authorized receiver by the module, the selective control based on the pairing to the authorized receiver and the identification (ID) number of the authorized receiver, wherein:
- the video signals comprise satellite television programming signals;
- and
- the module comprises a frequency translation module that receives the satellite television programming from an antenna;
- monitoring a signal strength of the video signals;
- outputting a legacy output from the module;
- monitoring a legacy signal strength of the legacy output;
- and
- selectively delivering signals on the legacy output based on a change in the legacy signal strength.
A fraud controlled satellite signal delivery system, for selectively delivering satellite video signals to an authorized receiver of a plurality of authorized receivers, comprising:
- input means for receiving a plurality of signals from an antenna, wherein the plurality of signals comprise satellite television programming signals;
- and
- controller means for selectively delivering at least one signal in the plurality of signals to the authorized receiver via an output of the controller means, wherein:
