Abstract
One embodiment of the invention includes a sinus tarsi implant with a proximal portion that includes a spherical portion. The spherical portion may include apertures for tissue in-growth. The implant design limits patient discomfort due to pressure points. Other embodiments are disclosed.
Claims20
A subtalar implant comprising:
- a central hollow shaft defining a longitudinal axis and forming a tunnel;
- a distal portion of the implant including a first maximum diameter, which is based on an outer diameter of a thread included in the distal portion;
- a middle portion of the implant including a second maximum diameter;
- and
- a proximal portion of the implant including a third maximum diameter;
- wherein the first and second maximum diameters are both smaller than the third maximum diameter;
- wherein the distal portion is proportioned to implant within a deeper canalis portion of a sinus tarsi of a patient;
- wherein the proximal portion includes a three-dimensional arcuate profile with an arcuate edge in first and second planes that are orthogonal to each other;
- wherein the arcuate edge arcs (a) in the first plane, which is parallel to the longitudinal axis, and (b) 360° in the second plane;
- wherein the arcuate edge is between the middle portion and a subportion of the proximal portion, the subportion defining the third maximum diameter;
- wherein the proximal portion includes apertures that (a) do not directly connect to the central hollow shaft, but (b) do couple with each other via a void, which is not coterminous with the central hollow shaft, located inside the proximal portion.

A subtalar implant comprising:
- a main body including a central hollow shaft, the central shaft defining a longitudinal axis and forming a tunnel;
- a distal portion of the implant including a first maximum diameter, which is based on an outer diameter of a thread included in the distal portion;
- a middle portion of the implant including a second maximum diameter;
- a proximal portion of the implant including a third maximum diameter;
- and
- first, second, and third apertures included in the distal portion;
- wherein the first and second maximum diameters are both smaller than the third maximum diameter;
- wherein the proximal portion includes a three-dimensional arcuate profile with an arcuate edge in first and second planes that are orthogonal to each other;
- wherein the arcuate edge arcs (a) in the first plane, which is parallel to the longitudinal axis;
- and (b) 360° in the second plane;
- wherein the proximal portion includes a proximal-most end that is non-arcuate in the first plane and coterminous with a proximal-most end of the implant;
- wherein a distal-most portion of the arcuate edge in the first plane is immediately adjacent the middle portion;
- wherein the first aperture is included in the main body at least partially between adjacent thread portions of the distal portion;
- wherein at least one of the first, second, and third apertures is at least partially included in the thread.
