## Abstract

A method and system to signal transmission layers or dedicated reference signal ports to be used in a multiple input multiple output system, the method including providing a downlink control signal containing information for transmission layers or dedicated reference signal ports utilized, the dedicated reference signal ports being associated with the transmission layers; and using the information to demodulate data on each transmission layer.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An eNodeB of a multiple input multiple output ‘MIMO’ system, comprising:
a processor;
a communications subsystem;

wherein the DCI comprises first information indicating a number of transport blocks and second information indicating an index value and;
wherein the index value identifies the selected combination from within a first plurality of combinations when the first information indicates a first number of transport blocks, and from within a second plurality of combinations when the first information indicates a second number of transport blocks.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

### Claim 5

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by a processor of an eNodeB, cause transmission of a downlink control information ‘DCI’ message identifying, to a user equipment ‘UE’, a selected combination of one or more transmission layers selected by the eNodeB for a data transmission to the UE, each transmission layer associated with a dedicated reference signal ‘DRS’ port;
wherein the DCI comprises first information indicating a number of transport blocks and second information indicating an index value and;

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 5 wherein a scrambling code is associated with the index value.

### Claim 8 (depends on 5)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 5 wherein the instructions cause the eNodeB to perform the transmission of DCI during at least one of long term evolution ‘LTE’ operations and LTE-advanced operations.

### Claim 9

A user equipment ‘UE’ comprising:
a processor;
a communications subsystem;
