## Abstract

A method for treating viral infection includes administering to a subject in need thereof a composition containing P2X receptor antagonists. The methods may achieve preventive or therapeutic effect on hand foot and mouth disease by inhibiting viruses. The P2X receptor antagonists can inhibit infection by a positive-sense single-stranded RNA picornavirus. The virus may be an enterovirus or a Coxsackie virus, such as human enterovirus 71. The P2X receptor antagonist may be PPADS, iso-PPADS, PPNDS, Suramin, NF023, TNP-ATP, NF279, NF157, Evans Blue, an analog thereof, a derivative thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for alleviating or treating hand foot and mouth disease, comprising: administering to a subject in need thereof a composition comprising a P2X receptor antagonist, wherein the P2X receptor antagonist is selected from the group consisting of: PPADS, iso-PPADS, PPNDS, Suramin, NF023, TNP-ATP, NF279, NF157, Evans Blue, an analog thereof, a derivative thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein a total daily dose of the P2X receptor antagonist is at 50-200 mg/kg body weight.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the administering is by oral administration, intravenous injection, intramuscular injection, or inhalation.

### Claim 3

A method for inhibiting infection by a positive-sense single-stranded RNA picornavirus that causes hand foot and mouth disease, comprising: administering to a subject in need thereof an effective amount of a P2X receptor antagonist, wherein the P2X receptor antagonist is selected from the group consisting of: PPADS, iso-PPADS, PPNDS, Suramin, NF023, TNT-ATP, NF279, NF157, Evans Blue, an analog thereof, a derivative thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein a total daily dose of the P2X receptor antagonist is at 50-200 mg/kg body weight.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the subject is a human, a monkey, or a mouse.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the virus is an enterovirus or a Coxsackie virus.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the virus is an enterovirus A.

### Claim 7 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the virus is a human enterovirus 71.

### Claim 8 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the virus is a Coxsackie virus.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the P2X receptor antagonist is Suramin, total daily dose of Suramin is at 50 mg/kg body weight.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein total daily dose is divided into several doses for administration in a day.

### Claim 11 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the P2X receptor antagonist is Suramin, total daily dose is of Suramin at 50 mg/kg body weight.

### Claim 12 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein total daily dose is divided into several doses for administration in a day.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the subject is a human, a monkey, or a mouse.

### Claim 14 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the administering is by oral administration, intravenous injection, intramuscular injection, or inhalation.
