Abstract
Systems and methods that improve video quality by signaling of parameters in a sample adaptive offset (SAO) process are disclosed. The methods and systems described herein generally pertain to video processing such as video encoders and decoders.
Claims20
A method for determining sample adaptive offset parameters for blocks of a frame of a video sequence, the method comprising:
- determining whether to infer sample adaptive offset parameters for a first color component of a current block of the frame based on sample adaptive offset parameters of a left neighboring block of the current block;
- responsive to determining to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on the sample adaptive offset parameters of the left neighboring block, using sample adaptive offset parameters of a corresponding color component of the left neighboring block as the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component;
- responsive to determining not to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on the sample adaptive offset parameters of the left neighboring block, determining whether to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on sample adaptive offset parameters of an above neighboring block of the current block;
- responsive to determining to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on the sample adaptive offset parameters of the above neighboring block, using sample adaptive offset parameters of a corresponding color component of the above neighboring block as the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component;
- and
- responsive to determining not to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on the sample adaptive offset parameters of the above neighboring block, explicitly signaling the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component of the current block.

An apparatus for determining sample adaptive offset parameters for blocks of a frame of a video sequence, the apparatus comprising:
- a processor configured to execute instructions stored in a non-transitory storage medium to:
- determine whether to infer sample adaptive offset parameters for a first color component of a current block of the frame based on sample adaptive offset parameters of a left neighboring block of the current block;
- responsive to a determination to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on the sample adaptive offset parameters of the left neighboring block, use sample adaptive offset parameters of a corresponding color component of the left neighboring block as the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component;
- responsive to a determination not to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on the sample adaptive offset parameters of the left neighboring block, determine whether to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on sample adaptive offset parameters of an above neighboring block of the current block;
- responsive to a determination to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on the sample adaptive offset parameters of the above neighboring block, use sample adaptive offset parameters of a corresponding color component of the above neighboring block as the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component;
- and
- responsive to a determination not to infer the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component based on the sample adaptive offset parameters of the above neighboring block, explicitly signal the sample adaptive offset parameters for the first color component of the current block.

A method for sample adaptive offset filtering, the method comprising:
- applying sample adaptive offset filtering to a frame including a current block according to an edge offset or a band offset for a first color component of the current block responsive to determining that a neighbor block of the current block usable for merge mode is available, wherein parameters for the edge offset or the band offset are inferred from the neighbor block.
