Abstract
The instant invention relates to mixtures of stilbene compounds which provide superior fluorescent whitening effects when applied to the surface of ink-jet papers.

An optical brightening agent comprising a mixture of compounds of formulae (3), (4) and (5)
- in which
- R is hydrogen or methyl;
- Y is a natural or unnatural amino acid from which a hydrogen atom of the amino group has been removed;
- and
- M is hydrogen, an alkali metal cation, ammonium, ammonium which is mono-, di- or trisubstituted by a C1-C4 linear or branched alkyl radical, ammonium which is mono-, di- or trisubstituted by a C1-C4 linear or branched hydroxyalkyl radical.

An optical brightening agent comprising a compound of formula (4)
- in which
- R is hydrogen or methyl;
- Y is derived from aspartic acid, glutamic acid or iminodiacetic acid;
- M is hydrogen, an alkali metal cation, ammonium, ammonium which is mono-, di- or trisubstituted by a C1-C4 linear or branched alkyl radical, ammonium which is mono-, di- or trisubstituted by a C1-C4 linear or branched hydroxyalkyl radical,
- and optionally one or more further compounds having optical brightening characteristics.
