Abstract
Described herein are methods for the bromine-facilitated synthesis of fluoro-sulfur compounds, that include SF4, SF5Cl, SF5Br and SF6. The methods described herein generally require lower temperature and pressure, produce higher yields, require less time, do not use corrosive or costly reactants and solvents that are commonly used in the synthesis of the fluoro-sulfur compounds, and do not produce deleterious waste products when compared to previously-used methods.
Claims15
A method of producing SF4 comprising:
- admixing a sulfur reactant, KF, and Br2, wherein:
- the sulfur reactant, the KF, and the Br2 react at temperatures from about 10° C. to about 27° C.;
- the reaction is within about 10% of completion in less than about 3 days;
- and
- the sulfur reactant, the KF, and the Br2 react to produce the SF4 in the absence of reaction solvents.

A method of producing SF4 comprising:
- admixing a sulfur reactant, KF, Cl2, and Br2, wherein:
- the sulfur reactant, the KF, the Cl2, and the Br2 react at temperatures from about 10° C. to about 27° C.;
- the reaction is within about 10% of completion in less than about 3 days;
- and
- the sulfur reactant, the KF, the Cl2, and the Br2 react to produce the SF4 in the absence of reaction solvents.

A method of producing SF4 comprising:
- admixing a sulfur reactant, KF, and Br2, wherein:
- the sulfur reactant, the KF, and the Br2 react at temperatures from about 27° C. to about 80° C.;
- the reaction provides a yield of SF4 within about 57% to about 96% in less than about 1 day;
- and
- the sulfur reactant, the KF, and the Br2 react to produce the SF4 in the absence of reaction solvents.

A method of producing SF4 comprising:
- admixing a sulfur reactant, KF, and Br2, wherein:
- the sulfur reactant, the KF, and the Br2 react at temperatures from about 10° C. to about 115° C.;
- the reaction provides a yield of SF4 within about 57% to less than 100%;
- and
- the sulfur reactant, the KF, and the Br2 react to produce the SF4 in the absence of reaction solvents.
