Abstract
The present disclosure describes methods and systems for enabling simultaneous redirection and load-balancing of data packets to network elements in a network environment. In one embodiment, a data packet is received at a network element. The network element identifies a traffic bucket corresponding to the data packet. The traffic bucket includes a matching criterion that identifies a subset of network traffic to map to a node. The data packet is redirected, based on the traffic bucket, from a first address contained in a field of the data packet to a second address that corresponds to the node. The data packet is forwarded to the second address.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- accessing a table comprising a plurality of mappings between a plurality of traffic buckets and a plurality of nodes;
- receiving, at a network element, a data packet;
- identifying, by the network element from the table, a traffic bucket of the plurality of traffic buckets corresponding to the data packet, wherein traffic bucket is associated with a node of the plurality of nodes and the traffic bucket comprises a matching criterion that identifies a subset of network traffic;
- redirecting, based on the traffic bucket, the data packet from a first address contained in a destination field of the data packet to a second address that corresponds to the node forwarding the data packet to the second address;
- and
- dynamically updating a number of traffic buckets in the plurality of traffic buckets based on real-time data associated with the node, wherein subsequent packets that are associated with the node are redirected to a third address instead of the second address based on the dynamic update.
A network element comprising:
- at least one memory element;
- at least one processor operably coupled to the at least one memory;
- a load-balancing and redirection manager comprising one or more instructions, that when executed by the at least one processor configure the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:
- accessing a table comprising a plurality of mappings between a plurality of traffic buckets and a plurality of nodes;
- receiving a data packet;
- identifying, from the table, a traffic bucket of the plurality of traffic buckets corresponding to the data packet, wherein traffic bucket is associated with a node of the plurality of nodes and the traffic bucket comprises a matching criterion that identifies a subset of network traffic;
- redirecting, based on the traffic bucket, the data packet from a first address contained in a destination field of the data packet to a second address that corresponds to the node forwarding the data packet to the second address;
- and
- dynamically updating a number of traffic buckets in the plurality of traffic buckets based on real-time data associated with the node, wherein subsequent packets that are associated with the node are redirected to a third address instead of the second address based on the dynamic update.
A computer-readable non-transitory medium comprising one or more instructions that, when executed on a processor, configure the processor to perform one or more operations comprising:
- accessing a table comprising a plurality of mappings between a plurality of traffic buckets and a plurality of nodes;
- receiving, at a network element, a data packet;
- identifying, by the network element from the table, a traffic bucket of the plurality of traffic buckets corresponding to the data packet, wherein traffic bucket is associated with a node of the plurality of nodes and the traffic bucket comprises a matching criterion that identifies a subset of network traffic;
- redirecting, based on the traffic bucket, the data packet from a first address contained in a destination field of the data packet to a second address that corresponds to the node forwarding the data packet to the second address;
- and
- dynamically updating a number of traffic buckets in the plurality of traffic buckets based on real-time data associated with the node, wherein subsequent packets that are associated with the node are redirected to a third address instead of the second address based on the dynamic update.
